BCE profit rose while revenue decreased as mobile subscribers fell in the first quarter.

The Canadian telco on Thursday posted net income of 683 million Canadian dollars ($493.4 million), or C$0.68 a share, up from C$457 million, or C$0.44 a share, in the comparable quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were C$0.69 a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting C$0.62 a share.

Operating revenues fell 1.3% to C$5.93 billion, in line with analyst estimates according to FactSet. BCE said its Bell Media division saw revenue grow 6.9% while digital revenue rose 12% as digital platforms and advertising technology continue to perform.

Bell Communication and Technology Services saw revenue decline 2.4% to C$5.25 billion, due to both lower service and product revenue, including lower mobile-phone blended average revenue per user as intense industry competition drives prices lower.

Postpaid mobile phone net subscriber losses were 9,598 in quarter, compared to a gain of 45,247 a year earlier.

This was due to a less active market, slowing population growth as immigration policies are normalized, and a company focus on higher-value subscriber loadings, it said.
