Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of Middle Island Resources Limited (ASX:MDI), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Director Daniel Raihani bought AU$226k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.015 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of AU$0.019. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Middle Island Resources insiders own 42% of the company, worth about AU$2.2m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
It is good to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Along with the high insider ownership, this analysis suggests that insiders are quite bullish about Middle Island Resources. Looks promising!
