Australia's seasonally adjusted wage price index rose 0.9% in the March quarter following a 0.7% increase in the preceding three-month period, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed on Wednesday.

Hourly pay rates, excluding bonuses, in the private sector rose 0.9%. Public-sector pay rates rose 1%.

"Private sector wage growth was also influenced by administrative wage adjustments due to the Stage 3 Aged Care Work Value Case, and the Early Childhood Education and Care Worker Retention Payment. It was also impacted by regular March quarter wage and salary reviews," said Michelle Marquardt, the bureau's head of prices statistics.

"Wages growth in the public sector was impacted by new state-based enterprise agreements, and to a lesser degree, increases paid to aged care workers," Marquardt added.

On an annual basis, wage growth rose to 3.4% in the March quarter from 3.2% in the December 2024 quarter, marking its first increase since June 2024.
