Meta Platforms (META) was served a cease and desist letter from Austrian advocacy group Noyb over the social media company's plans to use personal data from Instagram and Facebook users to train its new AI systems without opt-in consent, Noyb said Wednesday.

The advocacy group said it has sent a formal settlement proposal to Meta.

The group said that if injunctions are filed and won, Meta may be liable for damages to consumers, with damages possibly reaching "billions." Additionally, if an injunction is won, the company would be forced to delete any illegally trained AI system, the group added.

The group said it estimates potential liabilities could reach 200 billion euros if European courts award 500 euros in non-material damages per user, based on Meta's estimated 400 million monthly active users in Europe.

Meta Platforms did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
