The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into Tesla's plan to launch a paid robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, next month.
The U.S. auto safety investigator asked the electric-vehicle maker to provide additional information about the technologies that the company has developed for its robotaxi vehicles, including software, hardware, data and related systems, according to a letter sent last week to Tesla's director of field quality, Eddie Gates.
NHTSA is additionally seeking information regarding how Tesla plans to evaluate its vehicles and driving automation technologies for use on public roads, the letter states.
The letter--which notes NHTSA's ongoing investigation into Tesla Full-Self Driving collisions in reduced roadway visibility conditions--asks that Tesla also provide the agency with documentation including which of its vehicles are equipped with self-driving features, and what employees have worked on the features over their years of development.
