CN Rail Investing C$3.4 Billion to Build Rail Capacity, Drive Growth

Canadian National Railway plans to invest 3.4 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about $2.4 billion, in maintaining and expanding its rail network in North America.

The Montreal-based freight-rail operator said its capital program for the year will include roughly C$2.9 billion allocated to maintenance and strategic infrastructure programs across Canada and the U.S.

Projects already under way include more than 225 miles of new rail installation and about eight developments to boost capacity in Western Canada that are scheduled to come online by the end of 2025.

CN Rail said it is also putting more than C$500 million toward upgrading and expanding rolling stock.

The company also plans build on the about C$3.5 billion it had invested last year, of which C$1.7 billion went to maintaining the safety of its network and track. Of that, more than C$75 million was spent on a four-mile siding extension in the Greater Chicago area, boosting corridor capacity by 17%.
