Align Technology said Thursday that its Invisalign Palatal Expander System has been approved by the National Medical Products Administration in China.

The 3-D-printed teeth aligner is approved to treat skeletal malocclusion, or the malalignment of the jaws themselves, as well as dental malocclusion, which refers to misaligned teeth within the jaw. It can be used for patients with baby teeth or adult teeth, or for patients with a mix of both primary and permanent dentition.

The product is expected to be commercially available in China in the second half of the year, Align said. The company added that the approval marks a milestone in its efforts to enhance clinical outcomes and efficiency in orthodontics.

"We are excited to extend the availability of the transformative Invisalign Palatal Expander system, Align's first direct 3D printed orthodontic appliance, to even more doctors and their patients markets across the Asia Pacific region," said David Carr, who oversees Align Technology's Asia Pacific arm.
