Charter Communications is merging with rival Cox Communications in a deal likely to shake up the U.S. cable industry.

Charter, which operates the Spectrum pay TV and internet services, said ahead of the opening bell that it would combine with privately held Cox in a transaction valuing the latter company at about $34.5 billion.

Charter shares rose 2.4% in premarket trading after the deal was announced. Futures tracking the S&P 500 were up 0.3%.
