FirstEnergy Corporation has announced a proactive safety measure to address the potential hazards posed by mayflies along Ohio's lakeshore roads. As the mass emergence of these insects approaches, Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy, will temporarily suspend streetlight services in select areas including Port Clinton, Marblehead, and Erie Township. Mayflies, which are drawn to light, can create slick road conditions due to the oily residue left behind by their carcasses, especially during rain. This initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring safer travel for drivers. The streetlights will be turned back on once the mayfly hatching season concludes, typically between late June and September. Pedestrians and bikers are advised to exercise extra caution in unlit areas.
