Jobs Report, Powell Speech, Broadcom Earnings: What to Watch Next Week -- WSJ

The S&P 500 just finished its strongest month since November 2023. Next Friday, the U.S. jobs report will set the tone for June and give new clues on the effects tariffs are having on the labor market.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak Monday, fresh off his first meeting with President Trump since the start of the new administration. Trump has argued that Powell and his colleagues should lower interest rates, but Fed officials say they have time to gather more data before making a move and that waiting is the right strategy given the unpredictable effects of the tariffs.

Here's what to look for during the week ahead:

Sunday June 1

-- Federal Reserve Speaker: Fed governor Christopher Waller, scheduled to speak at 8 p.m. ET

Monday, June 2

-- Fed Speaker: Chair Jerome Powell, scheduled to speak at 1 p.m.

-- Earnings: Campbell's, before the bell.

-- Economic Data: Reports due in the morning on manufacturing PMI, along with construction spending data.

-- China Data: Manufacturing data from China is due in the evening U.S. time.

Tuesday, June 3

-- Earnings $(AM)$: Dollar General

-- Economic Data: April job-openings and labor turnover (JOLTS) data, due at 10 a.m., along with factory orders.

-- Fed Speaker: Gov. Lisa Cook, slated to speak at 1 p.m.

-- Earnings (PM): Hewlett Packard Enterprise, CrowdStrike

Wednesday, June 4

-- Earnings (AM): Dollar Tree

-- Economic Data: The ADP employment report and reports on business services PMI.

-- Federal Reserve: The central bank releases its regional economic commentary, known as the beige book, 2 p.m.

-- Central Banks: Bank of Canada rate decision

Thursday, June 5

-- Central Banks: ECB rate decision

-- Economic Data: Productivity and U.S. trade-deficit data

-- Earnings: Broadcom, the chip giant with a market cap above $1 trillion, is due to report after the bell. Also reporting, Lululemon.

-- Tariff Court Filing: Deadline for the companies that challenged Trump tariffs in court to file their arguments to a federal appeals court. The court will be will be deciding whether many of Trump's tariffs should be voided.

-- Fed Speaker: Gov. Adriana Kugler due to speak at noon.

Friday, June 6

-- Economic Data: Monthly jobs report for May is due at 8:30 a.m. The nonfarm payrolls data is expected to come in at about 127,500, according to the consensus estimate on FactSet. That would be a decline from 177,000 in April's report.
