Exxon Mobil (XOM) and a number of other major oil and gas companies are facing a lawsuit claiming wrongful death of an individual who died of hyperthermia, or overheating, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Misti Leon sued Exxon Mobil, Chevron (CVX), Shell (SHEL), BP (BP), ConocoPhillips (COP), Phillips 66 (PSX) and Olympic Pipeline Company, a subsidiary managed by BP, for allegedly causing the death of her mother Juliana Leon.
Leon reportedly passed away due to an unusual heatwave in the Pacific Northwest in June of 2021.
The suit, filed in state court in Washington, aims to hold the companies accountable for climate change and alleges they failed to warn the public of the dangers caused by the production of their products, the NYT reported.
None of the companies mentioned in the suit immediately responded to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
