Redwire Corporation has announced that its advanced manufacturing technology, Mason, designed for building infrastructure on the Moon and Mars, has passed NASA's Critical Design Review $(CDR)$. This milestone is part of a $12.9 million Tipping Point award from NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate aimed at supporting a long-term presence and exploration on the lunar surface. The project involves a collaborative effort with NASA Kennedy Space Center Swamp Works, Lambda Technologies, Colorado School of Mines, and the University of Central Florida, highlighting the involvement of multiple organizations in the grant. The Mason tool suite will enable the construction of essential structures such as berms, landing pads, and roads by converting lunar or Martian regolith into a concrete-like material, thus addressing challenges posed by regolith and reducing exploration costs. Redwire is now moving forward with fabricating a critical design prototype and seeking flight opportunities for a demonstration mission.
