REFILE-Exclusive: Guy Carpenter NA adds Jacobs, Maritzen and Mago in trio of senior hires

By David Bull

June 4 - (The Insurer) - Guy Carpenter has added a trio of senior executives to its North American operations with the hiring of Martha Jacobs as healthcare branch manager and segment leader, Mark Maritzen as senior client executive and Damini Mago as head of cyber ILS for the region.

Jacobs was most recently national healthcare industry practice leader at Aon; Maritzen was global chief underwriting officer at Everest Insurance; and Mago joins from RMS Moody’s, where she was most recently associate director of cyber.

The hires signal the Marsh McLennan-owned company’s ongoing efforts to bring in senior industry talent as it seeks to add to its capabilities and drive growth in the region.

According to internal communications seen by The Insurer, Jacobs will take up her new position on June 9, reporting to Guy Carpenter North America’s president of branches Alex van Dijk and the region’s president of sales and segments Rob McKenzie.

She will also work closely with the reinsurance intermediary’s president of centers of excellence, North America, Will Garland.

A joint internal memo from van Dijk and McKenzie picked up from sources by The Insurer said the Jacobs hire underscores Guy Carpenter’s continued commitment to its core medical professional clients and its ambition to lead across the broader healthcare space.

“By aligning our value proposition around healthcare, we are delivering greater strategic impact to existing clients and expanding our reach with commercial lines carriers,” it continued.

Jacobs started her career at Chubb on the underwriting side but had spent the last almost 21 years at Aon, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The internal communication stated that the executive has led teams of specialized broking, consulting and client servicing experts in healthcare.

In her new role she will focus on leading Guy Carpenter’s medical professional liability offering and team; driving innovation, deepening market insights, and “building bold, data-driven solutions that meet the evolving needs of the healthcare sector;” and accelerating sales across healthcare segments.

MARITZEN RETURNS

Maritzen’s move represents a return to Guy Carpenter, with the executive previously having worked for the intermediary and its Marsh McLennan stablemate Marsh in Germany, Switzerland and New York.

In a joint communication seen by The Insurer, Guy Carpenter’s CEO for North America John Trace and van Dijk said that Maritzen’s focus will be as a senior client executive for the C-suite of the region’s “premier clients”.

He will report to van Dijk and work closely with account teams to deliver the reinsurance broker’s offerings across global property and E&S business.

Before joining Everest in 2023, Maritzen worked at a range of carriers including Berkshire Re as a treaty underwriter and AIG as property CUO for North America.

He was an executive vice president at Sompo International and head of property at Tokio Marine Global after moving over from Guy Carpenter, where he had been managing director, in 2011.

CYBER LEADERSHIP

Mago adds to Guy Carpenter’s cyber leadership in North America and will report to Erica Davis, global co-head of cyber at the reinsurance intermediary.

A communication from Garland seen by The Insurer noted that insurers are looking for “new and innovative ways” to protect their portfolios from volatility and outsized cyber events.

It added that Mago will help drive growth in this emerging space, working closely with the cyber center of excellence and GC Securities teams.

Garland said: “With deep expertise in cyber modelling and alternative capital structures, her leadership will strengthen our position in the cyber risk transfer market and help us deliver innovative capital solutions to our cyber insurer clients.”
