1416 ET - Depressed consumer sentiment doesn't seem to have materially impacted demand for dining out, UBS analysts say in a research note. U.S. restaurant industry sales trends are showing improvement after a dicey start to the year, they say. Demand has room for improvement, which might occur if consumer sentiment improves, the analysts say. The demand resiliency is surprising, even with brands including Chili's, Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse likely driving a sizable portion of the elevated category growth, the analysts say. Their conversations with management teams indicate that casual dining is no longer described as a discretionary occasion and now represents a more affordable luxury relative to more big-ticket experiences.
