Jacobs Solutions Inc. has announced significant advancements in a groundbreaking research program aimed at revolutionizing the maintenance of England's road network. The Structures Moonshot Program, led by Jacobs and AtkinsRéalis and initiated by National Highways, has concluded its initial phases, presenting its findings to over 200 international industry delegates. The research focused on non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies for highway structures with hidden critical components, such as post-tensioned bridges. The results highlight the potential of these technologies to reduce unplanned road closures and enhance safety by allowing remote or minimally intrusive assessments of structural conditions. Among the technologies tested was muon tomography by Estonian company GScan, which enables detailed 3D modeling of internal structures without costly investigations. The program's findings, already presented, are set to equip bridge engineers with innovative tools for more efficient and targeted interventions.
