Kroger Lowes Prices and Simplifies Promotions -- Market Talk

1135 ET - Consumers are continuing to spend cautiously, seeking out promotions, trading down to private-label products and eating more meals at home, Kroger's interim CEO Ron Sargent says on a call with analysts. To better capitalize on these changing habits, the supermarket chain is simplifying its promotional strategies. The company has also lowered prices on more than 2,000 products so far this year, moves made possible by its low exposure to tariffs. "We are proactively looking for ways to avoid raising prices for our customers, and we consider price changes as a last resort," Sargent says. "Tariffs have not had a material impact on our business so far, and given what we know today, we do not expect them to going forward." Shares rise 9%. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
