A quiet plague of organised criminals and nefarious state hackers have been using artificial intelligence to pose as remote job applicants in an effort to infiltrate companies from the inside, steal data and hold them to ransom.
One quarter of all job applicants on the global market will be fake by 2028, according to modelling by market research firm Gartner. And while some applicants may be individuals attempting to fudge their true identity or to skirt a background check, there is mounting concern about a much darker side to the trend.
