Panasonic Holdings Corp. intends to commercialize next-generation perovskite solar cells in collaboration with other companies.

"Discussions are underway with various potential partners," said President and Group CEO Yuki Kusumi at a regular shareholders meeting on Monday. The company aims to accelerate the installation of these cells as windows or walls of buildings in urban areas by collaborating with design companies and others in order to meet the growing demand for electricity.

A pilot production line for modules measuring 1.8 meters in length and 1 meter in width is already in operation at a factory in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, with trial sales expected to begin in 2026.

Perovskite solar cells can generate electricity through such methods as by being incorporated into reinforced glass used as the walls for buildings. By using them, it would be possible to generate electricity even in urban areas where land for conventional solar cells is difficult to secure. The company is developing "glass-based" perovskite solar cells that can be used as a building material by utilizing technologies related to the inkjet process and in other areas.

The company is considering collaborating with companies that work in such areas as the designing of buildings and the manufacturing of sash and heat-resistant glass products. The so-called ZEB (Net Zero Energy Building), a building that aims for net zero energy consumption, is gaining attention among environmentally conscious companies. Panasonic Holdings intends to promote and sell its perovskite products not as solar cells per se, but as part of decarbonization efforts made by companies as well.
