Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. has issued a safety alert in response to ongoing drought conditions increasing the risk of wildfires this summer. With approximately 50% of Hawaii experiencing drought, the company is readying its Public Safety Power Shutoff program to mitigate ignition risks from its equipment during dry and windy conditions. Residents are urged to review emergency plans and prepare for possible evacuations. Hawaiian Electric is implementing a multi-year strategy to strengthen its grid, including replacing wooden poles, upgrading conductors, and installing hazard-detection cameras. In high-risk areas, power may be proactively shut off as a last resort to prevent wildfire ignitions.
