Analysts Expect 51 Billion-Cubic-Foot Rise in U.S. Natural Gas Inventories

U.S. natural gas inventories likely increased by less than average last week as a heat wave across the Northeast drove demand for gas to generate electricity for air conditioning.

Natural gas in underground storage is expected to have risen by 51 billion cubic feet to 2,949 Bcf in the week ended June 27, according to the average estimate of 11 analysts, brokers and traders surveyed by The Wall Street Journal. Estimates range from an injection of 36 Bcf to an injection of 59 Bcf.

The expected storage increase compares with the five-year average injection for the week of 61 Bcf. It would be the first below-average inventory build since April, and reduce the surplus over the five-year average to 169 Bcf from 179 Bcf the week before.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration is scheduled to report weekly natural gas storage on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
