Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, plans to invest more than $60 million before the end of this fiscal year in March to capture AI innovation.

The investment in its partner ecosystem will go toward collaborative marketing campaigns, incentive rebate programs and other activities to benefit both Alibaba Cloud and its partners, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Alibaba Cloud will help its partners expand their customer base, enhance their technical expertise and accelerate the adoption of advanced cloud and AI solutions for businesses globally, it said.

The move comes at a time when Alibaba's cloud unit hopes to gain more exposure overseas. Alibaba disclosed plans on Wednesday to launch data centers in Malaysia and the Philippines, expanding its presence in Southeast Asia.

Alibaba Cloud currently works with about 12,000 partners worldwide, including Salesforce, Fortinet and IBM.

Alibaba said earlier this year that the company plans to invest about $52 billion on cloud and AI infrastructure in the next three years. Chief Executive Eddie Wu said recently that the company will "accelerate the development of its global cloud computing network," spanning regions across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
