BHP Group Limited has signed contracts with COSCO Shipping Bulk Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Group, to charter two ammonia dual-fuelled Newcastlemax bulk carriers. These vessels, among the few globally capable of using ammonia as marine fuel, are expected to be delivered by 2028. Primarily intended to transport iron ore from Western Australia to Northeast Asia, the vessels aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% and up to 95% per voyage when using low to zero GHG emissions ammonia. This initiative aligns with BHP's efforts to promote low-emission fuels and contribute to the maritime sector's decarbonization. The five-year charter contracts are also part of BHP's commitment to the First Movers Coalition, aiming for 10% of its shipped products to use zero GHG emissions fuels by 2030.
