SBS Holdings (TYO:2384), a major Japanese logistics company, plans to address Japan's severe truck driver shortage by having foreign workers comprise 30% of its driving workforce within the next decade, Nikkei Asia reported Wednesday.

This ambitious initiative involves hiring 1,800 individuals, primarily from Indonesia, added the publication.

To facilitate this, SBS will establish a driving school in Indonesia this year, providing a six-month boarding program focused on Japanese traffic laws and language, the report said.

The company aims to recruit approximately 100 foreign drivers annually starting in 2026, marking a significant shift as it currently employs no foreign drivers through Japan's "specified skilled worker" program, it added.

SBS has yet to reply to MTNewswire queries at press time.
