Despite an already strong run, Radius Residential Care Limited (NZSE:RAD) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 76% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, when close to half the companies operating in New Zealand's Healthcare industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.8x, you may still consider Radius Residential Care as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.5x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

There hasn't been much to differentiate Radius Residential Care's and the industry's revenue growth lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Radius Residential Care. There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Radius Residential Care's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.6% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 33% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 4.2% each year as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 7.9% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Radius Residential Care's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Radius Residential Care's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Radius Residential Care's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
