After Leaping 35% TrueCar, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRUE) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar

Simply Wall St.

TrueCar, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRUE) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 35% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 40% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that TrueCar's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How TrueCar Has Been Performing

Recent times haven't been great for TrueCar as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Keen to find out how analysts think TrueCar's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For TrueCar?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like TrueCar's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 10%. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with revenue shrinking 15% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 12% each year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 12% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that TrueCar's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see average future growth and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

TrueCar's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our look at TrueCar's revenue growth estimates show that its P/S is about what we expect, as both metrics follow closely with the industry averages. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
