Swire Pacific Limited's (HKG:19) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x may not look like an appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Industrials industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios below 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Swire Pacific could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Keen to find out how analysts think Swire Pacific's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Swire Pacific's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 14%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 10% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.8% each year during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 3.8% each year, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that Swire Pacific is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Swire Pacific currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
