Tata Steel (NSE:TATASTEEL, BOM:500470) said that Tata Steel UK has started construction of its Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at Port Talbot as part of a decarbonisation plan worth 1.25 billion pounds, according to an Indian bourse filing on Monday.
The project is backed by (L)500 million from the UK Government, the filing said.
The EAF, expected to be commissioned by end-2027, will produce up to 3 million tonnes of steel annually from UK-sourced scrap and is projected to cut the site's carbon emissions by 90%, or around 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, the company said in the filing.
The project also includes new metallurgy facilities and infrastructure upgrades, with construction led by Sir Robert McAlpine and supported by regional contractors, it added.
