Market Participants Recognise Oiltek International Limited's Earnings Pushing Shares 30% Higher

Simply Wall St.
07-19

Despite an already strong run, Oiltek International Limited (SGX:HQU) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 392% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.

Since its price has surged higher, Oiltek International's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 35x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Singapore, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

We've found 21 US stocks that are forecast to pay a dividend yield of over 6% next year. See the full list for free.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Oiltek International has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Oiltek International's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 55%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 157% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 11% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 8.7% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Oiltek International's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Oiltek International's P/E

Oiltek International's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Oiltek International maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
