TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States Donald Trump stated that Indonesia is committed to purchasing 50 Boeing aircraft, the majority of which are Boeing 777s. He said this decision was the result of a trade agreement that the two countries reached after he met with President Prabowo Subianto to negotiate import tariffs.
"This morning, I finalized an important Deal with the Republic of Indonesia after speaking with the Highly Respected President Prabowo Subianto," said Trump in a post on social media, Truth Social, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, U.S. time.
On a separate occasion, Prabowo revealed the reasons for the purchase of dozens of Boeing aircraft. He mentioned that Garuda Indonesia will use aircraft from a U.S. manufacturer.
"We are determined, I am determined to grow Garuda. For that, we need new aircraft. I don't think there will be a problem because we need them and they want to sell," said Prabowo after returning from a working visit to several countries at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
So, which airlines have ordered the most Boeing 777 aircraft?
Referring to Flightradar24, Boeing has launched several types of the 777 series, including the 777-200, 777-200ER, 777-300, and 777-300ER. Its latest variant is the 777X, which is claimed to have a wider wingspan, more fuel-efficient engines, and will soon take to the skies in the coming years.
According to Business Insider, citing Simple Flying, Boeing has been facing ongoing production issues, leading to delays in the production of 6,000 aircraft. The latest generation Boeing 777X aircraft has experienced significant delays, falling at least six years behind schedule.
The Boeing 777X aircraft program was first introduced at the end of 2013 and was initially scheduled to start operating in 2020. However, due to certification constraints, the aircraft was rescheduled for launch in 2026.
As of July 2024, Emirates is the airline with the most orders for the Boeing 777X, with 205 units. This number is more than double that of its closest rival, Qatar Airways, which has ordered 94 aircraft.
Furthermore, Lufthansa is expected to be the first airline to receive the latest generation Boeing 777X aircraft in the coming years. The German airline has decided to purchase 27 units of the new generation Boeing 777X aircraft.
