Hyliion (HYLN) said late Thursday it received a $1.5 million phase 2 small business innovation research contract from the US Navy to advance development of its multi-Karno Core architecture for shipboard and stationary military applications.

The Karno power module is a linear generator powered by heat rather than combustion, designed to operate on more than 20 fuel types with low emissions, low maintenance, and minimal noise, according to the company.

The 18-month project will prioritize the development of software to manage multiple Karno cores, along with the refinement of power electronics and motion control to help accelerate the deployment of a full multi-megawatt shipboard generator system.

The company said phase 2 is expected to begin immediately.
