1845 ET [Dow Jones]--United Airlines logged a $218 million dent to its pre-tax income in the second quarter from having to cancel flights leaving from Newark, N.J., in May. It expects a smaller impact on its margins in the third quarter, which TD Cowen analyst Tom Fitzgerald estimates is about $140 million. United said it expects the Newark incidents effects to be gone by 4Q, as booking volumes at the airport have returned to normal. Fitzgerald notes that United likely would have beaten the top end of its second-quarter outlook range and raised its third-quarter guidance by 25 to 30 cents if not for the Newark cancellations.
