Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google is looking to establish content licensing deals related to artificial intelligence with news organizations, Bloomberg said Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Google, which has had strained ties with the media industry, plans to launch a pilot project with about 20 national news organizations, Bloomberg reported.

Media companies have lost both readers and advertisers to digital outlets and now view AI as an existential threat, said Bloomberg, adding that start-ups Perplexity AI and OpenAI have started paying publishers to use their content to power their chatbots.

Alphabet did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
