Port of Tauranga Limited has announced it will trial New Zealand's first all-electric container straddle carrier at its busy port, thanks to a grant from the Government's Low Emission Transport Fund, administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). The project, which includes the purchase of a Kalmar electric straddle and installation of charging infrastructure, has a budget exceeding $3.5 million, with EECA contributing $447,000. The trial, set to go live in late 2027, aims to test the operational efficacy and emissions reduction of this emerging technology, potentially leading to a wider rollout. The findings will be shared with other ports in New Zealand.
