Gannett said it has agreed to a deal with Perplexity, an artificial-intelligence-powered search engine, to license content from USA TODAY.

Gannett said Wednesday that content from USA TODAY and its network of more than 200 local publications will be integrated into Perplexity's search experiences, including its new agentic web browser.

The move reflects Gannett's aims to embrace transformative technology, and sets a standard for how trusted journalism should be valued, Chief Executive Michael Reed said.

"As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into the information ecosystem, we are committed to ensuring that our content is properly attributed and that we are fairly compensated," he said.

Under the deal, Gannett would share advertising revenue and leverage data to accelerate AI opportunities, Reed added.

The companies didn't disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said the platform is committed to partnering with the world's best publishers to ensure they benefit from new business models involving AI and journalism.

The deal comes as news organizations navigate a rapidly changing AI landscape. The New York Times announced its first AI-related licensing pact with Amazon.com in May, and is currently suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. News Corp, owner of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires, has a content-licensing partnership with OpenAI.

In October, the Journal and New York Post--another News Corp publication--filed a lawsuit against Perplexity, alleging copyright infringement.
