July Food Inflation Slightly Decelerates, Still Threatens Margins -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
昨天

1405 ET - July's consumer price index report showed that food inflation slightly decelerated last month, D.A. Davidson analyst Michael Baker says in a note. Food inflation rose 2.2% compared with 2.4% in June, yet this increase still marks the fifth month in a row of 2% or higher inflation. Higher food at home inflation could provide some same-stores sales benefits for the likes of Costco, Target and Walmart, the analyst says. But higher food prices could also erode margins and may threaten shoppers' willingness to add more discretionary items to their carts. Overall, July inflation ticked up, the analyst adds, but still came in no worse than expected. (@NatalieWeger; natalie.weger@wsj.com)
