American Water Works Co. Inc. has received regulatory approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project. This decision endorses the Phase 2 Demand and Supply Estimates indicating a significant water supply deficit in the region, projected to be approximately 815 million gallons per year by 2050. The approval supports the development of a crucial desalination project, part of a multi-faceted approach that includes aquifer storage and recovery, as well as the expansion of the Pure Water Monterey facility. Once operational, the desalination plant will provide a reliable, drought-proof water source, allowing California American Water to address the Water Resource Control Board's restrictions on pumping from the Carmel River. California American Water plans to commence construction of the desalination plant by the end of 2025.
