Ameren Illinois has announced an energy project to upgrade 2.75 miles of natural gas pipeline in Herrin. The initiative involves replacing the aging 1960s era steel pipeline with a new, corrosion-resistant polyethylene material. The project will enhance the service pipelines for around 240 customers, stretching from 18th through 22nd streets and north to south from West Walnut to Stotlar Road. With an estimated budget of $1.5 million, construction began on August 4, 2025, and is expected to conclude in 2026, subject to weather conditions. The company emphasizes safety, urging drivers to be cautious around work zones to ensure the well-being of workers. As part of the safety measures, Ameren Illinois will coordinate with J.U.L.I.E. to mark underground utilities before digging.
