Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) expressed an intention to accelerate the practical application of nuclear fusion power generation in collaboration with Japanese companies at a press conference in Tokyo on Wednesday.

CFS, a U.S. startup aiming to commercialize fusion power generation, said in August that it had received an investment from a consortium of 12 Japanese companies, including Mitsui & Co., Mitsubishi Corp., Kansai Electric Power Co., NTT Inc. and Development Bank of Japan Inc.

At around the same time, CFS also secured funding from U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia Corp. and others, raising about 863 million dollars (about 120 billion yen) in the latest round.

CFS plans to begin commercial operation of a fusion reactor in the United States as soon as the early 2030s.

CEO Bob Mumgaard said, "It would be foolish to think that fusion (power generation) will only happen in one place."

Mumgaard added, "When Japan decides to have a huge power plant, we're right there alongside."
