Dowa Holdings Co., a major Japanese non-ferrous metals company, is expanding its resource recycling business in the Kyushu region, by also focusing on semiconductor-related materials.

The company identified business opportunities following the expansion of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) into Kumamoto Prefecture in the region, which has led to a buildup of semiconductor-related companies in Kyushu. With an investment of about 5 billion yen, it is building a new plant in Uki in the prefecture for recycling precious metals and other materials, with operations set to start in October.

The approximately 6,000-square-meter factory will recover metals and plastics from used home appliances. It will also extract and recycle precious metals like gold and silver from waste materials generated at semiconductor factories and other sites. This precious metal recycling base will be the first established by the Dowa group in Kyushu.

At a later date, the company will consider both increasing the scope of recycling to include solar panels and storage batteries, among other materials, and expanding the factory.
