Microsoft (MSFT) is ending its long-standing remote work policy, mandating that employees return to the office at least three days a week, the company said ins a blog post Tuesday.

The change, outlined in an internal memo from Chief Human Resources Officer Amy Coleman, will begin with staff who live within 50 miles of the company's Seattle-area headquarters on Feb. 23, 2026. The mandate will then expand to other US offices before rolling out internationally. Employees can request exceptions by Sept. 19.

The decision is based on internal data showing that in-person collaboration leads to greater energy, empowerment, and stronger results, which is crucial for the company's focus on the "AI era," the memo said.

The new policy is not intended to reduce the company's headcount, but rather to "meet our customers' needs," Coleman added in the memo.

Microsoft didn't immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
