Yomiuri: Honda to Sell Hands-Free Electric Mobility Device

Honda Motor Co. announced Monday it will begin selling its "Uni-One" electric mobility devices to corporate customers starting Sept. 24.

Users can operate the hands-free device by shifting their body weight while sitting.

Leveraging control technology that the company developed for its biped robot "Asimo," Honda aims to lighten the load on individuals with walking difficulties, including seniors.

Unlike usual electric wheelchairs, "Uni-One" lacks control levers. Sensors attached to the seat detect the rider's posture. If the rider shifts their weight forward, the device moves forward, and if they lean right, it turns right.

It has a maximum speed of 6 kph and a range of 10 kilometers on a full charge. With the benefit of having both hands free, it is intended for use in security and other applications. The price of one unit starts at 80,000 yen per month, with either three- or six-year contracts available. The company is targeting sales of 4 billion yen and 1,000 units by 2030.
