Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE) announced on Tuesday that it has broken ground on three renewable natural gas (RNG) production plants across six dairies in South Dakota, Georgia, Florida, and New Mexico, which are expected to produce approximately three million gallons of RNG annually.

The projects will capture manure methane from roughly 24,300 cows to produce low-carbon fuel for heavy-duty trucking, transit, and vocational fleets and to supply Clean Energy's network of more than 600 stations, the company said.

The facilities will utilize Maas Energy's covered lagoon digesters, a lower-cost alternative to conventional anaerobic tanks. The three-site program is forecast to cost approximately $80 million, with completion planned for 2026, according to Clean Energy.

The company also said it retains the option to develop additional sites depending on market conditions.
