1046 ET - Canadian electricity flows into the Northeastern U.S. have been declining in recent years, partly because of drought limiting Canada's hydroelectricity generation and partly because of lower demand in the New York and New England independent system operators, the EIA says in a note. Canadian electricity imports provided 11% of NY-ISO electricity between 2016 and 2022. That fell to 3% in 2024 and 2% through August of this year. Canadian imports play a key role at times of high demand. In January Canada supplied 14% of NE-ISO's power, although on average through August it provided 5% compared with 14% between 2016 and 2022. While typically importers, "shifting trends have led to multiple days of net electricity exports into Canada from the two ISOs," the EIA adds. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
