Deutsche Lufthansa said it would cut about 4,000 jobs by 2030, mostly in Germany, as the airline continues to roll out artificial intelligence and automation of tasks.

The airline group said Monday that it is reviewing activities that won't be necessary in the future, for example due to duplication of work or the increased use of artificial intelligence.

The move comes as the group seeks to bring its airlines--Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and ITA Airways--closer together to boost efficiency.

Lufthansa, which employs around 102,000 people world-wide, said the cuts would mainly affect administrative roles, rather than operational positions, and should result in an EBIT uplift of 300 million euros ($351.1 million) per year. It estimates that the plan will cause one-time restructuring costs of about 400 million euros.

The reductions will be done through consultation with the unions, it added.

The announcement just comes days after Germany's Robert Bosch said it plans to slash 13,000 jobs over the next five years, as the car-parts supplier leans into artificial intelligence to maximize productivity.

Other major employers, including Daimler Truck and parts-supplier Schaeffler, as well as chemical firms Solvay and BASF, have in recent months said they would cut jobs in Germany.

Lufthansa, which is holding its capital markets day Monday, also announced new medium-term targets. Between 2028 and 2030, it expects adjusted EBIT margin to range between 8% and 10%, adjusted Return on capital employed before taxes of between 15% and 20%, and adjusted free cash flow to come at 2.5 billion euros. This should result in growing shareholder returns through dividends, it said.

The group will maintain a minimum liquidity of between 8 billion and 10 billion euros with the aim of hedging against potential crises, it added.

By the end of this decade, Lufthansa plans to add more than 230 new aircraft, including 100 long-haul planes, it said.
