Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) said it plans to close three staff bases, in Canberra, Hobart in Tasmania, and Mildura in Victoria, effective 2026, after a review, ABC News reported on Wednesday.
The changes are expected to impact around 70 pilots and cabin crew, who will be offered a support package.
The airline said that a review found that consolidating crews at major bases such as Melbourne in Victoria, Sydney in New South Wales, and Brisbane in Queensland would strengthen its operations. The firm had earlier said that it was considering the changes to "respond more quickly to disruptions and reduce delays and cancellations for our customers," per the report.
The Transport Workers Union said the decision showed the "complete failure from Qantas to listen to their workforce, the traveling public, or the outcry from local communities."
