Freight Recession Shows No Signs of Ending -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
2025/10/03

1049 ET - The trucking and freight industry has been stuck in a historically long recession over the past three years and current indicators show it's unlikely to end anytime soon, say Stifel analysts. Freight demand indicators are still soft and sluggishness in consumer spending, the housing market and industrial activity all will continue to limit demand. Carriers, brokers and shippers are all saying they are seeing slow business as a result of uncertainty about downstream consumption amid trade friction, high interest rates, a government shutdown and a broader recession risk. "There are few credible signs of relief on the near-term horizon," the analysts say. (nicholas.miller@wsj.com)
