Yomiuri: Isuzu Breaks Ground on New Truck Plant in U.S.

PIEDMONT, S.C. -- Isuzu Motors Ltd. held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for its new truck assembly plant in Piedmont, S.C. This marks the company's first independent plant in the United States, with operations scheduled to begin in 2027.

Trucks sold by Isuzu in the United States have either been assembled by local companies or imported from its Fujisawa plant in Kanagawa Prefecture. With the truck market in the United States expected to grow alongside increasing logistics demand, Isuzu plans to increase its local production ratio.

Isuzu Chairman and CEO Masanori Katayama, noting issues including high tariff policies of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, told reporters, "Having a factory in the United States will increase our options for coping with such things as procuring parts locally." Ceremony participants included an Isuzu executive overseeing North American operations and a South Carolina state official.

The new plant will cover approximately 750,000 square meters. Annual production capacity is projected to reach about 50,000 units by 2030, with over 700 employees expected to be hired. The total investment made into the plant is approximately 280 million dollars (about 41 billion yen), enabling production of gasoline and diesel vehicles as well as EV trucks.
