Casey's General Stores, which operates one of the largest convenience store chains in the U.S., has acquired eight stores in the Grand Rapids, Mich., area from the Salt Lake City-based Maverik chain, Casey's said.

The purchase raises the number of Casey locations in Michigan to 11, the company told OPIS. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Casey's, which is focused on the Midwest market, ranks eighth in the Great Lakes region in gasoline brand market share based on visits at 4.81%. Across the region, Casey's gasoline retails at market prices, according to OPIS MarketSharePro.

The sale of the eight stores takes Maverik out of Michigan, giving it little presence in the Great Lakes area, with only two stores in Minnesota, according to its website.

Maverik recently sold 26 Kum & Go stores in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, to Omaha-based convenience-fuel retailer Mega Saver and now operates more than 800 stores in 20 states.

Seven of the stores Casey's purchased from Maverik were branded Kum & Go, the large Midwestern chain Maverik acquired in 2023. One of the stores was a Maverik store that opened in May.

In the Grand Rapids area, Kum & Go ranked 12th in gasoline brand market share based on visits at 1.68%, selling gasoline at about 3cts/gal below market.

Casey's ranked 19th in that market at 0.15%, selling gasoline at about 2cts/gal above market, according to OPIS.

Casey's operates more than 2,900 stores across 19 states, according to its website. The company ranks 11th nationally in gasoline brand market share based on visits at 2.71% and prices gasoline an average of 1ct below the market, OPIS figures show.
