MEXICO CITY--Wal-Mart de Mexico named Cristian Barrientos as the company's chief executive, succeeding Ignacio Caride who resigned in early August.

Barrientos has been acting as interim leader and provisional board member since Aug. 1. His appointment "reinforces the retailer's long-term omnichannel strategy," the company said Tuesday in a release.

Barrientos joined Walmart in 1999 in Chile, and has held senior positions across Latin America, including senior vice president of operations for Walmart Mexico, chief executive of Walmart Central America, and more recently chief executive of Walmart Chile.

He will continue to serve on the Wal-Mart de Mexico board as a provisional director until his ratification in the annual shareholders meeting.

Wal-Mart de Mexico, or Walmex as the unit of Arkansas-based Walmart is known, had 3,191 stores in operation in Mexico at the end of June, and 933 stores in Central America.
