Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOGL), YouTube, and Snapchat (SNAP) are facing scrutiny over their age verification and safety systems under the Digital Services Act, the European Commission said Friday.

The Commission said it is asking the companies for information on how they prevent minors from accessing illegal products, including drugs or vapes, or harmful material, such as content promoting eating disorders.

The Commission stated that it is requesting that Snapchat provide details on how it ensures children under the age of 13 do not access its services, as prohibited by the platform's own terms of service.

"We have received the request from the Commission and will collaborate to provide the necessary information," a Snapchat spokesperson told MT Newswires in an emailed statement.

For Apple App Store and Google Play, the Commission said it is seeking information on managing the risk of users, including minors, downloading illegal or otherwise harmful apps.

The Commission is also asking Google's YouTube for details about how the platform recommends content following reports of minors gaining access to harmful content, it said.

Apple and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
